Course Assessments

Competency is assessed through a combination of knowledge and practical application:

  • Theory Review: Instructor-led discussions and knowledge checks to reinforce crane safety principles and current industry best practices.
  • Practical Assessment: Direct observation of crane operating skills, including safe load handling, controlled movement of equipment, and correct use of crane controls.

For Who

This course is intended for Wind Turbine Technicians and general site personnel who are required to operate fixed or mobile cranes located on wind turbine platforms or within the nacelle. It is designed to ensure safe and competent participation in lifting operations within wind turbine environments and is a vital qualification for anyone involved in daily crane use, including:

  • Wind Turbine Technicians and Engineers
  • Maintenance and Service Personnel
  • Subcontractors and Site Inspectors
  • Site Operatives requiring turbine access

PPE Requirements

For the practical training sessions, participants must provide:

  • S3 Safety Boots.
  • Durable workwear (suitable for climbing and mechanical environments.)

Note: Specialist PFPE and High-Visibility Vest is provided by Hexis.

Purpose

The GWO Crane User module is designed for personnel working in wind turbine environments who are required to safely operate installed crane systems for the movement of tools and equipment. The course provides the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to safely use crane controls, manage loads, and carry out lifting operations in a controlled and compliant manner within both onshore and offshore wind energy environments.

Course Content

This module develops the knowledge and practical skills required to safely use crane systems in wind turbine environments:

  • Crane Fundamentals: Understanding basic crane functions, load limits, and safe operating principles.
  • Legislation & Responsibilities: Awareness of duties, responsibilities, and safe use requirements for crane operations.
  • Crane Operation: Safe use of crane controls for lifting, moving, and positioning loads.
  • Load Handling: Safe attachment, movement, and placement of equipment using crane systems.
  • Lift Planning Awareness: Understanding basic lift requirements and identifying potential hazards before operation.
  • Communication: Effective coordination with team members during lifting activities.
  • Risk Awareness: Identifying hazards and applying control measures during crane use.
  • Emergency Procedures: Responding to faults, unsafe loads, or equipment issues.
  • Practical Operations: Hands-on use of crane systems for safe load movement and positioning.

Course Certification

Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded the GWO Crane User certificate. All results are uploaded to GWO WINDA
