Course Assessments

Competency is assessed through a combination of knowledge and practical application:

  • Theory Review: Instructor-led discussions and knowledge checks to reinforce service lift safety principles and current industry best practices.
  • Practical Assessment: Direct observation of safe service lift operation, including pre-use inspection, correct use of controls, emergency procedures, and controlled entry and exit from the lift.

For Who

This course is intended for Wind Turbine Technicians and general site personnel who are required to use service lifts within wind turbine environments. It is designed to ensure safe and competent vertical access within turbines, including:

  • Wind Turbine Technicians and Engineers
  • Maintenance and Service Personnel
  • Subcontractors and Site Inspectors
  • Site Operatives requiring turbine access

PPE Requirements

For the practical training sessions, participants must provide:

  • S3 Safety Boots.
  • Durable workwear (suitable for climbing and mechanical environments.)

Note: Specialist PFPE is provided by Hexis.

Purpose

The GWO Service Lift User module is designed for personnel working in wind turbine environments who are required to safely operate and use service lifts for vertical transportation within turbines. The course provides the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to safely use service lift systems, understand operational controls, and apply correct safety procedures to ensure safe ascent and descent in both onshore and offshore wind energy environments.

Course Content

This module develops the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate service lifts in wind turbine environments:

  • Pre-Use checks: Carrying out visual and functional checks of the cabin, cables, and control systems before use.
  • Operational Controls: Correct use of lift controls, including dead-man switches, floor selection, and emergency stop functions.
  • Load & Capacity Awareness: Understanding weight limits and the risks associated with overloading the lift.
  • Safety Systems: Identifying key safety features including overspeed governors and fall protection systems.
  • Emergency Descent: Practical understanding and use of manual descent procedures during power loss or system failure.
  • Evacuation Procedures: Safe methods for exiting a stalled lift between turbine platforms.
  • Reporting & Logging: Understanding requirements for recording lift use and reporting defects or faults.

Course Certification

Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded the GWO Service Lift User certificate. All results are uploaded to GWO WINDA.

Prerequisites

  • A high level of physical fitness and a “Fit for Work" health declaration that is completed on arrival.
  • A valid form of photographic identification on the day of training.
  • A minimum age of 18 years.
  • A valid GWO WINDA ID.
  • The ability to communicate effectively in English.

Note: Participants must be comfortable with heights and enclosed spaces. No specific prior lift experience is required but basic understanding of mechanical systems is recommended.
